Discussion:
Typing Japanese in Libre Office Writer (typing furigana)

Hello,

I have no problem typing Japanese kanji in Libre Office writer. I'm trying
to figure out how to type furigana above my kanji.
It's easy to do it in Microsoft Word, and I hoping this functionality exists
in Libre Office. Help is appreciated! :)

Hi,

I am Japanese user.(Sorry,I can not use English well)

Try next step.
1.Select kanji
2.[format]-[Asian Phonetic guide]
3.Type furigana in Ruby text
4.Apply

Akira,

Thank you. It works, except when I type Japanese in ruby text, it becomes
squares.
Do you know how to fix this?

Thank you.

That is the usual result when the font does not contain the required glyphs.

Change the font used for ruby text, which is a character style called
"rubies"

Change the font used for ruby text, which is a character style called

The end result works, but the preview for typing in the furigana doesn't.
In addition, you have to manually type in all the furigana.
I can't figure out a way to have the ruby text display...

It seems like I solved my own problem, with the help of others.
I accomplished typing furigana over kanji by selecting the kanji, format >
asian phonetic guide and typing the characters.
The most recent time I tried, the furigana characters in the ruby text box
don't update as you type. To get rid of the squares, I ended up downloading
another version of Libreoffice.
I made sure to download LibreOffice 3.3.2 (All languages)

Things I haven't been able to accomplish now.

How do you remove the gray shading from the furigana (ruby text)?

How do you change the default behavior from alignment left to something
else?

How do you change the default size of the ruby text?

Is there a way to make all these settings sticky, or at least have
LibreOffice default to remembering in my last setting used?

Hi Troy,
Post by Troy Testing Desu
How do you remove the gray shading from the furigana (ruby text)?
I suspect the grey shading is due to "Field Shadings" being activated. To
disable it, go to View -> Field Shadings (Ctrl+F8). I am not a Japanese
user and can't test my own suggestion. Please let us know if it works.

Ctrl+F8 does get rid of the shading. Perfect.

Change the settings for character style "rubies", and save that to your
default template.

Alternatively, Use the ">Format >Asian Phonetic Guide" settings.
Downside is that has to be reset at every use/

It seems like this is the only way, either change the default rubies
behavior, or make a new one, but when you make a new one, it always goes
back to rubies, so the best method seems to modify the original.
Unfortunately, making the other settings sticky is impossible, I guess.
Hopefully some programmer decides to look at this area and make it better.
Unfortunately, LibreOffice with regards to using furigana can't compete with
Microsoft Word's implementation.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Take a look at the Japanese localization extensions that the Japanese
l10n team for OOo created. I don't know how much of their l10n extension
codebase has been migrated into either the OOo or LibO codebase.

LibreOffice with regards to using furigana can't compete with
Microsoft Word's implementation.

http://openoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=37606 solves that issue.
However, Sun chose not to implement it. I don't know if
http://sourceforge.net/projects/itadaki/ is a viable solution.

Just checked out furigana. So a question I maybe should ask on the Chinese list: does anyone know whether there is an easy way to insert pinyin over Chinese characters in a similar way to furigana with Japanese?

TIA
