Discussion:
[libreoffice-users] Can't set the default printer

For the first time in a very long time, I am in a position of having
to use Windows 7 at work. I installed LO 5.3.4 for use with my
personal documents (and as many others as I can do without MSO), but
there is a problem.

The default printer on the system is a local industrial laser printer,
but for some reason, LO always defaults to print to "Send to OneNote
2013." This happens both in Writer and Calc.

The strangest part is that when I click on File -> Printer Settings,
the right printer shows up highlighted, with all the others also on
the list. It just tries to print to OneNote instead.

I don't have this problem on any of my Xubuntu personal computers
(desktop or notebook).

What am I missing?

You mean, if you print from that Dialog and you have selected the
correct printer in the list, it nevertheless prints to OneNote?

Do you get the printer properties of the selected printer in that dialog?

Are you sure, that the default printer is correctly set in Windows 7,
not in some LibreOffice dialog but directly in Windows 7 ?

Do you have the problem for new documents or for existing documents? You
can disable the option "Load printer settings with the document" in
Tools > Options > Load/Save > General, so that LibreOffice does not try
to use a printer setting, which is stored in the document, where the
printer might not be available.

I'm working on Windows 7, but do not have such problems, with neither of
the LibreOffice versions.

Kind regards
Regina

(I keep forgetting this list is not reply-to-all by default.)

Hi,
You mean, if you print from that Dialog and you have selected the correct
printer in the list, it nevertheless prints to OneNote?
No, it comes up with OneNote selected as the default. I can change
that, but it's an extra step I feel should not be necessary.
Do you get the printer properties of the selected printer in that dialog?
Yes.
Are you sure, that the default printer is correctly set in Windows 7, not in
some LibreOffice dialog but directly in Windows 7 ?
I checked that. The Windows default printer is correct.
Do you have the problem for new documents or for existing documents? You can
disable the option "Load printer settings with the document" in Tools >
Options > Load/Save > General, so that LibreOffice does not try to use a
printer setting, which is stored in the document, where the printer might
not be available.
It was for old and new alike, although I took your suggestion.

Thanks.

Go to Windows Device - > Printer settings and set the default to the
printer you prefer.

To clarify. If the printer seems like it's set, set a different as the
default and then set your preferred as the default again (basically, toggle
your default printer off and back on).

I think I had the same trouble with Win7 and an Epson Workforce printer.

I do remember reinstalling the printer drivers and looked at the
differences with "personal" default printer and "system wide" default
printer.

I do not have and Win7 devices anymore, since I decided to up them to
Win10. Also, my default OS is Ubuntu 16.04LTS with MATE desktop
environment.

If you are able/allowed to do so, you may want to try
uninstall/reinstall the printer drivers you use.

I do not have an "industrial" printer, but my HP Laserjet 2300dn printer
is the default printer for my home office. Actually I also have the HP
Officejet 7000 wide format printer and 2 Canon inkjet printers - Pixma
MG6220 and Pixma TS9020 printers - on the printer "wall" in a different
room from where I do most of my work using my laptop.

Over the years, I have had some printer issues with Windows - now with
Win10 wanting to use their printer "apps" instead of the printer drivers
that the printer install packages create. So Win7 should make it easier
to use. It just get hairy if the drivers that are installed gets
corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
